Chair for the Readers

A community reading space where overlooked voices, alternative histories, and bold ideas spark dialogue that crosses every divide.

Chair for the Readers

In a world increasingly divided by race, caste, religion, and economic inequality, Chair for the Readers seeks to create a shared space for curious minds to explore diverse perspectives and engage with ideas critically and compassionately. Initiated at the SABAR office in Kidderpore, Kolkata, the programme serves as a community reading and dialogue space featuring overlooked texts, alternative histories, contemporary research, and socially relevant literature that challenge stereotypes and encourage reflective thinking. Through regular storytelling sessions, book discussions, reading circles, and public conversations, the initiative aims to nurture a culture of informed dialogue and democratic engagement among young people and local communities. The programme was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, and the long-term vision is to replicate similar neighbourhood reading spaces across different parts of West Bengal.
