A research and cultural initiative training young women to document, narrate, and lead heritage walks through the neighbourhoods they call home.

Drawing on nearly a decade of experience in organising neighbourhood walks and community engagements, SABAR is launching Neighbourhood Narratives, a research and cultural initiative aimed at documenting the layered histories, diversity, and lived experiences of several culturally significant yet often overlooked neighbourhoods in Kolkata.
The initiative combines research, storytelling, heritage documentation, and youth leadership development. A group of young women students from different communities will be trained in documentation methods, oral history collection, storytelling, and heritage interpretation. Some participants will also receive specialised training to become licensed city-tour guides, enabling them to organise heritage and cultural walks within their own neighbourhoods.
The programme seeks to create meaningful livelihood and leadership opportunities for women while fostering inclusive public engagement with Kolkata’s plural social and cultural histories. By reclaiming neighbourhood narratives from below, the initiative aims to strengthen community pride, inter-community dialogue, and historical understanding.
